Koobface.gen!D has been harassing the inboxes of numerous Facebook and MySpace users. It all begins with an intriguing message sent to your inbox, supposedly from your friend. The message comes with a puzzling subject header such as “My home video :)”, “Paris Hilton Tosses Dwarf On The Street”, “LOL” or “My friend catched [sic] you on hidden cam”. In the message is a link, once you click on the link you are directed to another website where you are advised to download an updated version of Adobe Flash player. Of course, instead of downloading Flash player you actually downloading and executing the sneaky net worm Koobface.

Once on your system the malware redirects your search engine (Yahoo, Google, Ask.com) results to malicious third party sites. Victims are also bombarded with irritating pop-ups, some of which will lead you to a fake scanner sites such as ''http://spywareprotectiontool. com/2009''. To the inconvenience of the victimized user, Koobface.gen!D often comes with a DNS filter program that prevents the user from accessing trusted security websites, making the removal of the malware even more of a mission.

A proxy tool that comes with the malware gives cyber criminals access to the private data stored on an infected computer. This could possibly be the most dangerous characteristic of the malware; should cyber criminals have access to your private details Identity theft could very easily occur. Unfortunately for your social networking friends, if you get infected with this virus all your listed friends will be automatically sent the very same infection, purportedly coming from you!

So, for your own and your friends' sake, stay clear of computer threats such as this one. If you find a message with a suspicious heading in your inbox, don't be hesitant to delete it.     Many of today’s computer users are plagued with viruses and other malicious programs. Spyware adware removal has become an important part of the computer world. Firstly a very basic description of what spyware and viruses are and what they do is appropriate.

Spyware is best slotted into two categories, the nuisance category and the category that can seriously compromise the security of information stored on your PC. If I suspect I have a virus or Spyware – What do I do?

The first thing is to do a scan with a reputable spyware/adware remover. Not all current branded virus software will pick up a lot of spyware because a lot of spyware is there from the users own invitation and not harmful to the operation of the PC – so a lot of files get ‘over-looked’ rather than missed.

Unfortunately I did not appreciate the difference until I had my PC badly infected – but you live and you learn as the saying goes.

There are quite a few software packages out there that will let you scan your system for free and then will charge a lifetime membership fee for protection. Most decent ones should cost no more than about $35 and there are plenty to choose from.

Quite a few of them are free and very good but leave it up to you to work out how to get rid of an infection.

Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
Run ERUNT.
Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
Click on OK
Then click on YES to create the folder.

Download Avenger from here and unzip to your desktop.
Run Avenger, make sure that the box next to "Scan for rootkits" has a tick in it and that the box next to "Automatically disable any rootkits found" does not have a tick in it, copy,then paste the following text in Input script Box:

Download RSIT by random/random from here but before saving, in the Save dialog, rename rsit.exe to explorer.exe and save it to your desktop.

It does not seem to matter that people are almost constantly being told about scams on social networking sites, it seems that some feel Twitter is safer than Facebook or MySpace. Why? Who knows.

The many shortened URLs that people deal with on Twitter should be the first clue that problems are a distinct possibility.

A piece from AllThingsD brings news of the problems, and warns those who are not otherwise careful about scams and phishing attacks -

Twitter’s astonishing growth doesn’t just generate awe and giant valuations: It attracts scammers who want to prey on the service’s ever-expanding user base.

The most recent example: A new wave of phishing attacks, which are generally — but not always –sent via the service’s “direct message” feature. And which generally — but not always — feature language like “LOL is this you” in the message.

Like most phishing attacks, this one has some tell-tale signs, if you’re the kind of person who’s inclined to see them. There’s the odd text in the message itself. And the “bzpharma” text that appears in the url address is a big giveaway.

But! Like many other phishing attacks, if you’re not looking for this stuff, or you’re just clicking quickly, it’s easy enough to get duped. The fake Twitter homepage they’ve created looks clever real enough, as does the “fail whale” message you get after entering your info.

Clicking anything while having a system connected to the internet, without looking  at what is being clicked is a recipe for disaster anytime. Twitter just makes things a bit worse because it tends to run almost on a “stream of consciousness” modality.

One easy step you can take to arm yourself against this kind of thing: Follow Twitter’s “Spam Watch” account, which does a decent job of keeping people informed attacks like these. But while that account has 148,368 followers, and tends to get retweeted a lot, the majority of Twitter users still won’t learn about this stuff in advance. Maybe it’s time for Twitter to build some equivalent of the emergency broadcast system.

The Emergency Twit System, for those otherwise not paying attention. With some gnarly sound as the tweets show up, it could actually work. Kind of like the old Emergency Broadcast System –this is a test, only a test, to see if you are actually paying attention. Should a real emergency occur, you will be directed with an Emergency Twitter…

It could work, provided it did not happen too often.

Some time back, my 3 years old computer is running slow, so I have to buy a new computer. Or at least I think I need a new computer. In a week surfing the Internet on my new computer, it also started to run so slowly. In addition, some programs will not run properly on my computer, and I can not recognize some of the programs running on my computer. I fear that the most. How did those program or computer program be there when I do not remember installing them? I know I have to find answers and solutions quickly.

The truth, we can leave it that way, but very few of us want others to have access to information in our computer. However, this can happen when spyware or malware is loaded on our computers without our knowledge.

In addition, it is very easy for your computer to become infected with spyware as a “majority of all the download games, music, screensavers, and more, you can infect your computer with spyware or adware. Most people do not know that just click on a random” pop up “ads, their computer may be infected with spyware or adware.”

No matter how we get spyware, here are 10 reasons why you do not want spyware on your computer.

However, they are still in our computer, waiting to spy on us, at least.

Why do you have so many partitions? As far as I know you can't defrag the WBFS partition but I dont see a reason why you couldn't defrag the others. Someone else may have a different answer. It wont free up much space and probablly wont help the spinning down.

    Hard Disks store data in concentric circles on a disk. Each circle is called a track and is made up of a number of sectors each holding data in a block of a few Kb in size). As files are usually much bigger than a sector, they are spread across many sectors and sometimes many tracks.

    Over time, as files are deleted and created, it may not be possible to store a file in consecutive sectors and reading it may take longer as the head has to wait for the other sectors and this can be a rotation or more which is a long time. It's fascinating watching the head move across the disk and a tribute to precision engineering that it can so quickly and precisely move to a specified track.

    More disk reads or writes means slower file I/o and that's when defragmentation software comes in to reorganize the sectors on disk. Windows has a rudimentary defragger but you can get a powerful open source one that does every version of Windows from NT onwards (not 95 or ME). Written in C, UltraDefrag is at version 4.0 and is designed to defrag as fast as possible. It can also move files to optimize for fast disk operations and also defrag during the boot up for those system files and registry that can't be defragged during normal operation.

    The thought of developing defraggers has always been a bit scary as the potential to mess up a disk seems quite high so congratulations to Dmitri Arkhangelski the author and his team for their work which is GPL licensed.

      One of the reasons why your Windows computer become slow over time is because the files on the hard drive can become fragmented. What is that?

      As you start filling your hard-drive with new programs, documents, and other files, the operating system tries to find vacant places on the hard-drive to place these files. Like an artist who breaks a tile into multiple pieces to form a mosaic, your computer will break these file into fragments and store them in different places across your hard drive.

      When you load a program or open a file, the computer will have to first assemble these “fragmented” pieces thus decreasing the performance.       One of the reasons why your Windows computer become slow over time is because the files on the hard drive can become fragmented. What is that?

      As you start filling your hard-drive with new programs, documents, and other files, the operating system tries to find vacant places on the hard-drive to place these files. Like an artist who breaks a tile into multiple pieces to form a mosaic, your computer will break these file into fragments and store them in different places across your hard drive.

      When you load a program or open a file, the computer will have to first assemble these “fragmented” pieces thus decreasing the performance.       Hi my PC has been out of action for some months now.

      Avast 4.8 is detecting C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\plvodftu.sys as infected by the Rootkit from my thread title.

      I'm at a loss on how to clean things up. Firefox has been knocked out and IE only works slightly. Spam Emails are generated and sent out which Avast makes alerts for.

      Feeling quite sheepish and the amateur

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
      3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
      4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

      Yesterday we reported that HTC will unveil three new smartphones at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Spain and the rumors are now true. The Taiwan-based corporation has unveiled the HTC Legend, HTC Desire, and the HTC HD Mini. There are lots of other interesting stuff in HTC’s keynote including new HTC Sense UI and Adobe Flash 10.1 support. More on that below.

      The HTC Legend is definitely the successor of the HTC Hero and we can see that from its form factor and design. The Legend was used by HTC to introduce the new HTC Sense UI which combines all social networking services like Twitter and Facebook into one service called Friend Stream. The HTC Legend is “hidden” under an aluminum casing and it looks really cool. I definitely appreciate the optical mouse pointer instead of the trackball.

      After the Legend introduction, HTC unveiled “the Superphone that we’ve all been waiting for.” The HTC Desire features a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Nothing extraordinary at the moment, but the Desire comes with multitouch out of the box, text reflow, an improved design, and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support. The HTC Desire is definitely superior to the Google Nexus One: personally, I like the design, while the browser should be awesome with these cool features, and with Adobe Flash 10.1 it will provide the best mobile web browsing experience outrunning the Nokia N900.

      HTC said that people prefer small devices and the HTC HD2 was kinda big for most users so the company decided to launch the HTC HD Mini. We don’t see the point of this product as Microsoft unveiled the new Windows Phone 7 Series yesterday and we don’t think the HD2 and the HD Mini will be upgradeable to the new OS. Anyway the new HTC Sense UI is present in the HD Mini and another feature of the Windows Mobile phone is that it can be turned into a mobile WiFi hotspot for your desktop computer.

      Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO, said that the new HTC Sense is coming to the Hero and that it will also run on the Desire. This user interface is simply amazing as it provides “richest visual experience possible.” Chou added that HTC will release lots of Windows Phone 7 smartphones this year, while the recently-unveiled trio devices will be shipping as of April.

      I am really excited about the HTC Desire as it looks good and it’s very powerful. Chou said that they’re working with all major carriers around the world so we can expect the Desire to be subsidized by T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint, but you cannot bet on that. More details should be released in the following weeks. I’m really excited and I think you are too! Check out the gallery below where you can see the Legend, Desire, and the HD Mini.

      I am a big fan of the Maemo 5 platform as you can see in my Definitive Nokia N900 Guide so the news that Nokia and Intel are combining Moblin and Maemo to create the MeeGo Linux-based software platform for future mobile computers, notebooks, tablets, and more is quite exciting. MeeGo will also offer the Qt application development environment and allow developers to feature applications in the Ovi Store and Intel’s AppUpSM Center. Looking at the Nokia plot of their operating systems it looks like Maemo is out while MeeGo replaces it moving forward too.

      Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo stated:

      MeeGo will drive an even wider range of Internet computing and communication experiences for consumers, on new types of mobile devices. Through open innovation, MeeGo will create an ecosystem that is second to none, drawing in players from different industries. It will support a range of business models across the value chain, building on the experience and expertise of Nokia, Intel and all those who will join us. Simply put, MeeGo heralds a new era of mobile computing.

      With Nokia’s high quality devices and Intel’s solid processors we should see some interesting pieces of hardware. I have not seen any news of hardware demonstrations or a time table for any device releases yet.

      I think it's fair to say that the prohibitive favorite in the Olympic pairs field is the Chinese veteran pair and two-time reigning Olympic bronze medalists, Shen and Zhao.  But they aren't the only gold medal possibility.  They're up against two-time reigning world champions from Germany, Savchenko and Szolkowy, as well as the late-surging Russian pair Kavaguti and Smirnov, among others.  

      The Contenders

      Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov (Russia):  Kavaguti and Smirnov have all the makings of a great pair team, including a bit of fearlessness (they're one of the few pairs that attempts the throw quadruple salchow).  They had a fairly disappointing start to the season, losing all of their Grand Prix competitions, but it looks like they are a pair that peaks at the right time. They were able to snag a bronze medal at last season's world championships and recently won their first European championships, beating three-time reigning European champs and two-time reigning world champs Savchenko and Szolkowy.  Although they aren't often perfectly clean, the judges really like them and I expect to see them score high here.  They are coached by Tamara Moskvina, who has several Olympic champion pairs teams to her credit.  And they're a Russian pair at the Olympics – Russians have quite a track record in this event.  A Russian or Soviet team has won at each games since 1960.

      Qing Pang and Jian Tong (China):  Vancouver marks the third Olympics for this pair, who won the world championships in 2006, following the last Olympic games.  They haven't been back in the top spot since, although they've been very successful and had several strong performances.  Sometimes it's hard for them to stand out among more exciting pairs, but they have a great free skate this season.  If they skate clean, they should be right up there in the medal mix.

      Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy (Germany):   These two were poised to head into this competition the gold medal favorites. Then they finished a distant third at the Grand Prix Final, lost training time due to Savchenko's mono (what unfortunate timing!), and lost the European championships to Kavaguti and Smirnov. Things just have not fallen into place for them this season, with the exception of Skate Canada, where they skated so beautifully.  Their short program and free skate are both among the best programs of the season, in my opinion.  They've been waiting for their chance for four years and I think we'll definitely see some fight from them.  I believe that this pair and Shen and Zhao are truly the two best pairs teams in the world – but will they be able to deliver when it counts the most?

      Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo (China):  This is Shen and Zhao's fourth Olympics.  They are two-time Olympic medalists and three-time world champions.  They recently came back from retirement to try one last time for Olympic gold.  They are formidable.  They are not only technically strong, but they've also developed into some of the most beautiful artists in the sport.  They're married and their connection is evident when they skate.  They're a sentimental favorite here, as a team that was so good for so long but could not get the biggest prize.  Despite their dominance this season, winning the gold will not be easy for them.  I believe they may be able to win with a minor error or two, but if the other teams are on their games, anything could happen.

      The Dark Horses

      Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison (Canada):  The home team, these two are smooth and have a romantic sense and will definitely have the crowd behind them.  Though they won bronze at the world championships two years ago, they haven't quite skated up to that level internationally in the time since.  I'm not sure if I see them getting on the podium here unless they are perfect…and the other top teams make a few mistakes.

      Maria Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov (Russia):  Mukhortova and Trankov have been in the world medal mix for a few years but have not yet broken through.  They looked promising at the season's start with an upset win at Trophee Eric Bompard over Savchenko and Szolkowy, but have not lived up to that performance all season.  They have a great style and a lot of power, and they have two beautiful programs this season.  If they're clean, then they could very well be on that podium.

      Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang (China):  Zhang and Zhang are the reigning Olympic silver medalists and reigning world silver medalists.  I actually think they have a chance at a medal, but I don't think they're contenders for gold here.  They are another late-peaking team; they recently won their first competition of the season at a watered down Four Continents – they skated very well there.  They had some troubles in their first competitions of the season with their short program, which they've ditched in order to skate to an older program they are more comfortable with.  The weak link in this pair is Dan.  She can often appear uncomfortable and lose focus.  However, they seem back on track at the right time, and they obviously know how what it's like to medal at the Olympics, so they should not be counted out.

      Others to watch out for:  Ukraine's Tatiana Volosozhar and Stanislav Morozov (for the outfits if nothing else).

      American Chances?  I don't think there is much of a chance for either U.S. team to get on the podium.  However, they are definitely worth watching.  I'm especially interested in seeing if Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett can skate lights out as they did at Nationals.  I just don't think they quite measure up presentation wise, and even technically in certain areas like lifts, to the major contenders here.  But hopefully a few more years of experience will allow them to develop and become true contenders.  Read more about the U.S. teams here.

         My fave outfit too. loved when they were in sync and the striped side was perfectly matched up. No joke – last night we were watching and I too proclaimed, I should have been an olympic athlete. Josh wondered which event and I couldn’t pick just one that I’d clearly excel in and Clyde reminded me loud and clear (as we’re hanging at our SKI house) “Mom, you don;t have an idea how to ski!”

      Viewers who watched the pairs short program Sunday night caught a shot of 2002 Olympic champions Jamie Sale and David Pelletier as commentators for Canadian television.

      The duo is best known for sharing the gold with Russia’s Anton Sikharulidze and Elena Berezhnaya in Salt Lake City as a result of a judging scandal. After the Games, both pairs turned professional.

      In an unusual twist of fate, Pelletier has teamed up with Berezhnaya – one of his Olympic rivals – for an upcoming pro skating competition. The two will skate together on “Thin Ice,” a “Dancing With the Stars”-esque reality show.

      Sale will also be competing on “Thin Ice,” with Canadian ice dancer Patrice Lauzon.

      It’s unclear whether Sikharudlize will participate.

      It doesn’t really matter if Pelletier beats out Sale for the $60,000 cash prize – the money will go to a joint account. The couple married in 2005 and welcomed a son, Jesse, in 2005.

      “Thin Ice” will air on ABC in March. It’ll be hosted by four-time World Champion Kurt Browning and “The View’s” Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

      Normally at this time of year, die-hard Bobcats fans are getting ready to spend some time focusing on … something besides the Bobcats. But this is a different kind of year for our NBA team, and thanks to Gerald Wallace, we’re gearing up for a different kind of All-Star break.

      Charlotte’s whirling dervish of a forward is the first player in the team’s six-season history to be selected to play in the NBA All-Star Game, which is set for Feb. 14 in Dallas; he also will compete in the Feb. 13 Slam Dunk Contest.

      So, naturally, the Bobcats organization is making a big deal out of it.

      The festivities kick off Saturday night, before Charlotte faces the New Orleans Hornets at Time Warner Cable Arena: The first 5,000 people in the doors get a free Gerald Wallace action figure, and a booth will be set up so fans can videotape a message for the star – as well as offer suggestions about what dunks he should attempt in Texas.

      Wallace-focused fun then culminates next weekend, when the Bobcats host “watch parties” for both Saturday’s dunk-off and Sunday’s game at the Wild Wing Café in Ayrsley Town Center. During breaks in the action, fans can win prizes and mingle with the Lady Cats.

      Also on tap: Through 5 p.m. Saturday, visitors to www.bobcats.com can enter for a chance to win a trip for two to the All-Star Game in Dallas, an autographed All-Star jersey, or one of several other prizes. Then there’s “The Gerald Wallace All-Star 2-Pack ticket special,” a fancy way to sell you a set of tickets to the final two Bobcats home games before the break – Saturday’s game against the Hornets and Tuesday’s versus the Wizards – for only $33.       To top it all off, the team appears to have a shot at making the playoffs this spring for the first time in franchise history, after five seasons of futility.       –Monte Poole nails it: The Warriors should trade Monta Ellis.

      He has all the reasons:

      -The continued tension between Ellis and Don Nelson and between Ellis on and the front office.

      -The rise of Stephen Curry and the logic that Curry and Ellis have not and will not excel together in the backcourt.

      -The current lousiness of the team and the projected future lousiness of the team with or without Ellis.

      -Ellis’ remaining four years and $44M after this season, as Chris Cohan faces financial strains and the NBA looks to trim back salaries.

      My add…

      Obviously, I agree with this.  The Warriors would be much better served to keep Curry and find a way to land a big guard who could move without the ball and defend top-flight perimeter scorers.

      They’d have a lot better mix. They’d have better chemistry. They’d highlight and emphasize their strengths, instead of jamming similar players together in the frenzied desire to sell tickets. 

      Chemistry. Mix. Winning. Do they think about these things? Not that much, naturally.

      From the day they drafted Curry, I’ve thought that Curry and Ellis were too similar physically and stylistically (both need the ball in their hands) to work well together.

      And I thought (and I believe Ellis thought) that the player who would suffer most is Ellis and the player who would have to go is Ellis.

      Ellis obviously isn’t suffering in the individual scoring stats, which some people obsess over. He’s getting all the shots he could ever want. He’s playing way too many minutes.

      
      But that’s also working against him–I’m not the only one wondering if Don Nelson is playing Ellis all those minutes to make some kind of strange Machiavellian point or maybe several of them…

      a) Look, I don’t have any players, I have to kill the ones I have by playing them all game!

      b) Look, I don’t have any players, and I barely include Monta in this, so let me kill him by playing him all game!

      c) Look, Monta isn’t very good, because I play him all game and we still lose!

      d) Look at how great a coach I am because I play him all game and the team appendages tell me how great that is!

      The problem that Nelson runs into: He’d probably like to trade Ellis (and has wanted to for several years), but there’s not a strong market for Ellis right now.

      There’s all that money. There’s the injuries issues. There’s the chemistry issue–he’s a small guard who shoots a lot, and many teams don’t necessarily crave those kinds of players.

      I’m not saying that there’s no market for Ellis. He’s a huge scorer and an electric presence and teams always are interested in those things.

      But I’m saying that Rowell won’t give him away for nothing, because Rowell needs to sell tickets–more desperately now than ever.

      And I’m saying that the Warriors almost certainly will not get an offer of equal talent or even potential talent/draft picks for Ellis.

      This will be a difficult one. They should trade Ellis. They should’ve tried to trade him months ago, when it was obvious to most people–except them—that the drafting of Curry meant that Ellis would be heading out the door.

      Now it’s tougher. The Warriors do not excel in these moments. Larry Riley, make some magic!
